SEASTARS guide to Capella

SEASTARS has published D2.1 – Guide on CAPELLA and SPEC Tool, providing partners with a practical manual for using these key System Engineering tools within the project.

This handbook is a practical guide for applying Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in ship design using ARCADIA/Capella and the SPEC tool. It introduces MBSE concepts, explains the structure of Capella models, and provides step-by-step instructions for installation, setup, and analysis. In addition, it includes guidance on using SPEC to preselect feasible technologies, manage operational requirements, and explore modular design possibilities.

Guide on Capella and specs tool.

Having this documentation available helps ship designers, engineers, and stakeholders:

  • Understand and apply MBSE methods, languages, and tools in a structured way
  • Speed up the design process by working with reusable modules and concurrent workflows
  • Translate operational requirements into realistic, testable solutions
  • Improve collaboration across engineering levels while reducing design costs and risks

In short, it serves as both a reference and a hands-on manual, making MBSE more accessible and effective in the context of modern ship design.
